I have obtained some documents that Heckel used during the 1975 time frame. Several of these documents had been used for years.
In the past, Heckel offered a wide array of models of bassoons. At the time of Heckel's 100 year anniversary (1931) the Heckel catalog listed 25 models of the Heckel bassoon--including the model 41met which had a metal body! This model was reportedly produced for tropical climates. Keywork options were offered by way of these different models.
The model number 41 has always been used for the German system bassoons, while the model number 42 was the designation for the World System keywork (left hand French system, right hand German system).
Currently, Heckel produces only one model of the bassoon, the 41i. Click here to see the standard catalog options offered for a new Heckel bassoon.
Heckel bassoon serial numbers are assigned when the wood for the instrument is chosen for construction. After the serial number is assigned the wood is cured for at least 12 years. This can cause variations in serial number/year progression; it is possible to have a lower serial number shipped after a higher serial number has shipped.
Heckel bassoon serial numbers are not continuous. There are known gaps in the serial numbers. The reason for these gaps is not always known even by the factory. For example, according to company sources:
...we can confirm that there are no instruments [bassoons] from [serial numbers] 11389 to 11501 ever built; maybe we had a design change during that time.
This web page uses the convention serial/manufacturing mark, e.g., serial number 7273, manufacturing mark 2 would be displayed as 7273/2. This number is sometimes erroneously referred to as a desk number or a bench mark. The manufacturing mark does not connect a specific instrument with a specific builder or build desk in any way.
The following is an explanation of some of the typical variations you may find in instrument descriptions:

4705 | 1908 | 1 | The instrument has a large bore, much larger than almost any other 4000 series bassoon; it's dimensions are much closer to a modern instrument than any of its neighbors in the 4000 series. Also, it has much thicker walls. The instrument is walnut-colored and has the original ivory ring on the bell. The long joint has a modern, rounded cross-section. | Restored by Keith Bowen; completed in January of 2000. Work included adding high-D and high-E keys, in addition to new laquer and complete silver replating. The old F# mechanism, which closed also the low-E key using a special bridge linkage, was replaced and the tone hole resized to suit modern specifications. Also, Keith added keys with rollers for C#/D# and F#/G#. A whisper key was added by Heckel sometime in the distant past. Used for many years in the Bergen Philharmonic in Bergen, Norway. Also used in the Contemporary Chamber Composers and Players. | 2/2000

6617/5 | Nov 1927 | 2 | In Case Back of Wing and Front of Boot Back of Bell and Long joint | According to the factory, this instrument was originally delivered to Carl Fisher in New York. The bassoon was built to A 437.5. The instrument has a strange anamoly; the stamped manufacturer's mark is 5. (a 5 followed by a period). All of the keywork has VI scribed on them. This appears to be a case of the instument being originally marked as 5 and then re-numbered to 6. | 4/2007 (PublicSurplus.com)

There are a number of features on this instrument which had not been in normal production for a Heckel bassoon since the 6200 series. 7416 | 1933 | 3 | French whisper key and an unusual alternate A flat key mechanism. Instead of the usual hole with a post through it, the bassoon has a key that goes around the boot joint, thus eliminating the A flat hole on the thumb side of the boot joint. It also has a roller between the whisper key and c sharp key. | Used in in the Dallas Symphony, the Chicago Symphony, the Bergen (Norway) Philharmonic, the New Mexico and Santa Fe Symphony Orchestras.
